Ben Johnson cheating

In the Seoul Olympics the men were racing in the finals of the 100m sprints. There were two men who everyone had their eyes on, Ben Johnson and Carl lewis. The crowd shouted ‘go Ben Johnson!’ or ‘go Carl Lewis!’

The race was between Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis. Ben Johnson was ahead of all his competitor including Carl Lewis. Finally Ben Johnson won and got a new world record.

About 3 hours later they realised that Ben Johnson had drugs. They tested his wee twice and found drugs in both of his test.  They showed and proved all the crowd and Ben Johnson the proof that he had drugs.

Ben Johnson's world record was gone again. He knew he was going to get very punished, and he was. He got banned from sprinting and had to fly back home.

Ben Johnson got his gold and shiny medal taken off him and it went to Carl Lewis. Now Carl Lewis is the champion in the finals of the 100m sprint. Ben Johnson will never be seen in the sprint ever again.

pierre de coubertin

After a gap of hundreds of the years the Olympics returned to Athens in 1896. The reason behind the recreation of the Olympics was because of one man Pierre de Coubertin. Pierre admired the Greeks ideals of fitness and sporting competitiveness amongst different communities and he hoped that the modern Olympics would bring countries closer together.

1896 Olympics

The Olympics of 1896 in Athens in Greece had fourteen countries taking part with most of the athletes from Greece. This first modern Olympics was the largest meeting of international competitors that had ever occurred. The next Olympics held in Paris for years later was the first to allow women competitors this time the Olympics where part of a much bigger event and lasted several months.

Fencing

The Persians and Greeks used fencing for practicing sword fighting. They did fencing to not hurt anyone but still practice fighting with swords. Fencing is like using a sword that bends lots.

Today at the Modern Olympics there is a buzz noise for when to start and when the match has finished and in the old Olympics there were no buzzing noises. In the old days they had to do it outside and in these days they do it inside places. In the olden days the swords were heavy and In the modern days they’re lighter.
Competing in fencing people use different swords for different types of fencing. Epee Is the sword that you can hit your opponent anywhere on the body. Saber Is the sword that you can hit your opponent above the belt. Foil is the sword that you can only hit your opponent on the chest.

Pheidippides

The Greeks were exhausted as the battle came to the end. After the Greeks won against the Persian army Pheidippides was sent to send a message to the People of Athens saying they won against the Persian army. Before Pheidippides left his General wished Phidippides good luck then Pheidippides ran off like a cheetah.

Never giving up Pheidippides ran taking no water. Pheidippides went over rocky mountain that were very high and very steep. After 9 hours of running Pheidippides saw Athens off in the distance, he gasped and ran towards it.

Arriving at Athens Pheidippides told the people the message.  “Joy! we won!” shouted Pheidippides as he died. Now every time they run they will remembers Pheidippides by calling the race the Marathon.

The Olympic flame

The ancient greeks started the tradition of having an Olympic flame. In Olympia a sacred flame is lit by the sun's rays and stays alight until the games have ended. The flame symbolized a request for protection from Zeus and the athletes’ struggles for victory.

The modern flame symbolizes the light of the spirit, knowledge and life. To this day, the torch is still lit in Olympia in Greece, then carried by a relay team, passing runner to runner, until it reaches the host-city of the games. There, the cauldron will be lit and stay alight until the closing ceremony.
