Should Facebook be more vigilant in checking that users are over the age of 13?

Makayla:
I think that facebook should be banned for users under the age of 13 because there are a lot of bad influential content that is not suitable for younger users. I think that facebook is really stepping up their game as they have upgraded their policy. So that if an account with a under-aged user is found facebook must be provided with information that shows their over 13. I also think that under-aged kids should be banned because they haven’t really experienced the world of social activities and more, by also saying that I mean that under-aged kids might accept friend requests from strangers and might get themselves into trouble.

Bethan: There are people on the world wide web who aren’t really the most responsible, and because they can’t target adults who are smarter than children, they target children. Children don’t know what to do so they do what there instincts tell them, their instincts aren’t always right, and the adults can’t always monitor us.

Tehillah:I personally believe that children under the age of 13 shouldn’t have a facebook account. Kids that are 12 and under don’t know what happens when you meet people that you don’t know. They haven’t experience what social media is like. They are to young. There are many adult or hackers in the world that are aiming at younger kids. Social media haves strange people that are hiding behind screens kids don’t know who there meeting or what there meeting. If kids add people that they don’t know they are adding them to there social media life. Parents aren’t there to supervision their children 24/7.

Caleb: I think that people under 13 should not be able to log into facebook. People that are under 13 are less responsible, meaning that if they log onto Facebook, they are likely to do something like share something inappropriate or write something mean towards someone, which might get them or their parents in trouble. A way to counter this happening might make them to have to sign in every time you go on, or maybe you had to take a screenshot of your face, and if you are under 13, you get kicked of. I also think that Facebook is for adults, and some of the content that is on Facebook might be inappropriate for young people. I also think that there should be a password that can be whatever a parent wants, and that they should not tell kids the password. People should also be careful when adding people as friends on Facebook. For all you know, you could add someone who is a mass murderer. There should be a form that tells you about them, so you can see if you want to add them or not.
Nasibah: I think it’s better to have an account to any social media website when your at least 16. Children under the age of 13 are immature. Cause some content are a little bit rude. And kids do need to know what they can share and not share, and some things online can be used to hack other people.

  1. What a treat Caleb to see such enthusiastic students taking a serious topic with such gravitas. I liked the way you observed the 'rules' of the debate and realised the power of building and adding to ideas already in discussion. This is what enriches a topic by really looking at multiple perspectives and ideas and then forming conclusions from a range of evidence. Keep up the great arguments.
